NORTH VERNON, Ind. — According to an article in the North Vernon Plain Dealer, a fire occurred on Saturday, March 30, and claimed the life of a North Vernon man, leaving his two daughters and two grandsons homeless. A gofundme page has been set up to help the family.
Mark I. Ramey, 66, a former employee of the North Vernon Plain Dealer, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the article, Ramey’s daughters, Megan and Sarah Ramey, and Sarah’s two sons, Devin and Jordan, also lived in the home. Megan was not at the house when the fire started.
Authorities say Sarah discovered the blaze and was able to alert her sons. One of her sons, who received first-degree burns from the flames, attempted to save the victim but was unsuccessful.
There were reportedly multiple oxygen tanks in the two-story farmhouse, some of which ignited. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department speculated that the victim was smoking while using oxygen, causing the fire.
A memorial service for Ramey is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Queensville Community Church.
