COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) released its response totals for calendar year 2024 on Wednesday. Last year, the department responded to 6,834 incidents, a 0.7% decrease from the 2023 total calls.
The majority of CFD calls for service remain Emergency Medical calls. Medical emergencies accounted for about 71% of all calls in 2024 while fire-related calls accounted for only 2% of total calls.
Just over 12% of the runs were Good Intent calls (when a citizen calls in a potential hazard and is determined to be safe). Examples may be a report of a natural gas odor in a home where firefighters find no detected gas leak or a residential smoke alarm activation with no smoke or flames in the house. False fire alarm calls accounted for 6.8% of the total 2024 runs, up 2% from 2023.
CFD reported an 8% decrease in actual fire calls last year. Emergency medical calls were down 1%.
Columbus Fire Department Public Information Officer Mike Brown said, “We are honored to serve you in 2025 and look forward to continuing our efforts in community risk reduction and operational efficiency to provide the best available services to our community.”
