SOUTH-CENTRAL, Ind.–The National Weather Service(NWS) has confirmed that at least one tornado touched down during the severe weather on Friday, May 17. On Sunday, the NWS will be sending out another team tomorrow to investigate likely tornado damage in Brown County and western Bartholomew County.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office is currently reporting that most of the damage is centered around Grandview lake area, 3 to 4 houses had substantial damage, road closures, 500 residents near Grandview Lake are currently without power. One injury was reported at Brown/Bartholomew County line near Bellsville Pike just past the Grandview Lake area.
Sheriff Chris Lane is asking to for people to stay away from the roads in the area if possible while they clean up the damage.
The Brown County Emergency Management office is reporting significant damage to between 25 to 35 houses and four people hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries following Friday night’s storms. According to preliminary reports, the property damage ranged from damaged roofs to entire houses being destroyed. Brown County Emergency Management teams will be sent out to survey the full severity of the damage tomorrow.
The National Weather Service have not received any reports of tornadoes from the other counties at this time. We will update this story as we learn more.
