JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. – Indiana State Police (ISP) concluded a vehicle pursuit in southern Indiana with the use of a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver on I-65 and arrested an Illinois man on reckless driving and drug possession charges on Wednesday, June 18.
Senior Trooper Randel Miller from the Indiana State Police (ISP) Drug Interdiction Unit attempted to stop a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer for following too closely on I-65 near the 51-mile marker. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Kyle Edward Jurkovic of Joliet, Illinois, refused to stop and accelerated away from the trooper. Jurkovic fled south on I-65 at extreme speeds, sometimes exceeding 100 mph.
Multiple units from the ISP and local law enforcement agencies responded to assist, but Jurkovic continued southbound, weaving through traffic. The pursuit continued into Scott County, where a Scott County deputy successfully deployed Stop Stick tire deflation devices, which Jurkovic struck with at least one tire. After continuing south, he exited onto State Road 56 at the Scottsburg exit and attempted to re-enter I-65 via the northbound on-ramp. As Jurkovic accelerated northbound on the ramp, Trooper Miller executed the PIT maneuver on the Trailblazer, bringing the pursuit to a stop as the Blazer spun off the on-ramp and overturned onto the emergency lane of northbound I-65. Kyle Jurkovic was taken into custody once the vehicle came to a stop. Medical personnel assessed Jurkovic before officers transported him to the Jackson County Jail.
