INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists are currently on scene of a deadly crash on I-70 westbound near the 83 mile marker (North Split).
Earlier today, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Indiana State Police Dispatchers began receiving several 911 calls about a crash on I-70, early reports were that a semi had lost an entire load in the roadway and the driver was unresponsive. When Troopers and other first responders arrived they located the driver of a semi unconscious and not breathing, the man was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
The crash involved a semi tractor-trailer and one passenger vehicle. None of the occupants in the passenger vehicle suffered serious injuries. Preliminary investigation determined the driver of the semi braked abruptly, the flatbed trailer was loaded with sheets of plywood, when the driver braked the load broke loose from the trailer and struck the back of the semi-tractor.
At this point of the investigation, troopers believe a vehicle made an abrupt lane change in front of the semi causing the driver to brake.
All westbound lanes of I-70 were closed for nearly an hour, the left lane has recently been re-opened.
